Some animals can pose problems in the environment and therefore need to be controlled. Any animal has the potential to become a pest when introduced to a new environment. In New Zealand, there are plenty of examples of animals that have become pests and the focus of large control programmes. Possums, rabbits and mustelids are major pests of the environment that affect native flora and fauna as well as farmland productivity.

The problems that animals can cause are numerous. Rabbits in large populations can affect pasture quality and livestock with their feeding and burrowing habits. Possums devastate native plants through consuming thousands of tonnes of vegetation a night. They also act as a vector of Bovine tuberculosis. Mustelids feed on birds eggs and chicks which threatens some of the highly endangered species that are found in New Zealand.

Trapping is a common method for animal control. This method is used when it is not appropriate to use chemicals. Trapping is also a method of monitoring the pest population in an area. This gives a residual trap catch rate.

There are many poisons that can be used to control animal pests. Depending on the pest that you want to control different poisons will be used. Chemicals can affect animals in different ways therefore if you are controlling a number of pests there may be a variety of bait stations and baits laid. These will often need to be monitored and replenished at different times and rates.

Shooting is an effective method of controlling some animal pests. For large animals that are causing problems like deer and goats shooting is the control method of choice. It is effective but labour intensive for pests like rabbits and possums and therefore not used as frequently as trapping and baiting.

Possums were introduced to New Zealand for the fur trade. The New Zealand climate is ideal and they can breed up to twice a year. In New Zealand the native plants do not have defence mechanisms, so all are tasty and very nourishing to the hungry possum. There are no natural predators in New Zealand for these animals so they can feed and breed at will which greatly increases the population. In their native Australia they are endangered. The reason is that they have to survive predators like snakes and dingos and half of the native flora is poisonous or unpalatable to them. Unfortunately, New Zealand is the perfect breeding ground and our native plants, like the rata and pohutukawa, are threatened by the possums eating behaviours. They can also vector a disease of cattle – bovine tuberculosis.

Rabbits were introduced to NZ in the 1800’s as part of the fur trade. They needed to be introduced several times before they established. Once established in the environment they soon became a problem. Extensive feeding and burrowing in pasture destroys the grass and creates hazards for livestock in those paddocks. Rapid breeding increases the population and the problems. They have developed immunity to diseases like Rabbit Calicivirus which for a brief time managed to reduce the populations in the South Island.

Mustelids were introduced as a way of controlling rabbits. Unfortunately they became as much of a problem as the animal they were introduced to control. Ferrets, weasels and stoats are all clever predators of our native species. Eggs and chicks of birds like the kiwi are in danger from these pests.
